What my body tells me about my daydreaming

I know I daydream a lot. Imagination is not bad though. Some quotes say that imagination is better than knowledge which I completely agree with. The knowledge that we get from our surroundings and the advancements of technology sometimes starts from our imagination first, airplanes and computers are examples.  But what if we imagine too much? to the point where it's slowing down our productivity?

Just today, it comes to my mind this reflective question what's going on with me? Why do I daydream too much? What happens to my reality? Then I realized, this is actually a coping mechanism to get away from the reality that I don't like. Perhaps, I have been listening to others too much and my imagination is telling me that this is not a reality that I really want to live. Perhaps, my body is telling me that I don't like what I am doing right now.

Lucky me, I have this belief that "in order to change or to go somewhere we want to go, we have to make peace with where we are now". Aah, it's been a while not breathing the fresh air. I honestly have never had a chance to express how much I hated my first 2 years of college, it was not the life that I was dreaming of. I don't like the idea of suck it up and just do it (whatever things that don't spark joy in me)

This is the price that I had to pay for being too scared not to living my best life. At this point, change is a must! My body keeps telling me to give my dream a shot and make it a reality, would you like to give your dream a shot too?

5 Years Recovering From Reverse Culture Shock

It's not unfamiliar for exchange student alumni to hear the term "reverse culture shock". According to Investopedia, reverse culture shock is the emotional and psychological distress suffered by some people when they return home after a number of years overseas. As an Indonesian-born who went to the United States for one school year, I for sure have experienced this. But what happens if I tell you that it can take a longer time for some others at recovering from culture shock? What if I tell you that it took me around 5 years to finally make peace with myself and accept that everything that's happening around me right now should be embraced wholeheartedly?

Here are some things that I experienced that prolong my sufferings:

Dear younger fellow exchange student alumni, read this carefully so you won't experience the long-suffering I had been through

1. Being critical towards my environment

For exchange students, it took a lot of dedication to get used to things in the host community. But when we finally succeed and finally blend in a new environment, we have to go back to a place where you once called home and that might be the place where we were raised for many years. we might feel excited when we return home to finally meet our family and old friends. But "shoot, why don't everyone here say "thank you" as much as people in Illinois? Why aren't many people here bothered by this amount of pollution? Why is this city so full of people who are just too hesitant to take public transportation? Oh come on, we have too many vehicles in this city!" That's what I felt after two months living in Medan, Indonesia and two months after departing from the United States for my exchange study program. The honeymoon phase was all ended and I stopped feeling excited.

I know it's good to express distress as a teenager for emotional relief but does not mean we have to be dramatic and complaining all the time. All of the things that we dislike about our hometown comes from an improved way of thinking after we have travelled enough to learn about all the good stuff that's happening in our host community. With this new way of thinking, our presence would be very beneficial to our environment because we can spot the problem that people in our community didn't think existed. Practising critical thinking is good only if we have systemic thinking in finding solutions. There's always something wrong when we have an eye for something wrong. Why don't we take a rest and let the stress go? A lot of things in our environment are just something that we can't control or maybe it can only if we take revolutionary actions, which complaining is just not one of them.

2. Being critical towards the people around me

At some point, we all want to be understood. I, myself want to be understood too. Something that I didn't quite understand is while I was travelling the world, meet new people, and learning a new culture, my family and my old friends still live in the same city and doing similar activities. I didn't realize how my experience was shaping me into somebody who now has different values and beliefs about the world. It was really frustrating to witness how these people treating me in a way that they think I like it which I actually don't. It feels so isolating and lonely that people who were once very close to me aren't interested in a new topic that I like to discuss. It felt like I was losing some friends. But now I realized that it's not their job to understand me. I was seventeen when I experienced this for the first time. People come and go and it took some time to realize it's actually good. Your vibe will attract your tribe anyway, the more you showcase the new you, the more likely your new friends are coming.

Now that it's been more than 5 years since departing from the U.S., I have to accept that I still miss my exchange student life. It's the greatest achievement that I have ever done in my life. But the world keeps moving, and I should not feel stuck. It's time shift my focus towards what's happening and appreciate it instead of focusing on what's missing. Just because I wasn't talking about my exchange life that often, doesn't mean I already found closure in the past. The purpose of this writing is to solidify the feeling of closure that has been rising for a couple of days and for those who can relate to my story, and also for anybody willing to understand my story with an open heart.

I will forever miss America

On Being Hesitant To Express Something

Have you ever been so hesitant to express something?
In my case, I am a little hesitant to write this because I could see the point where people might not get this message right. It felt like there is no point of writing this at all.

Of course, the past event is the cause of all of this. Some people take our opinion in a wrong way. The memory of those who took my affection for granted is holding me back to express tenderness. And for sure, the memory of those "friends" who accused me for doing something that I have never meant to do made me think twice, do they even deserve my attention?

We all have our own story why we get here, but one thing that we should always remember is
"Their problem is theirs, not yours. Your problem is yours, not theirs"

It's their problem to take you in a wrong way, but it's your problem to over think.
It's their problem to take you for granted, maybe they don't understand sincerity. But it's totally your problem if you stop being kind.
It's their problem to start the fire, but it's totally your problem if you got the ill feeling about it.
And so on...and so on...

What we can do is to fix our own problems. Our main problem is we are hesitant, that we over think, that we are afraid. Acknowledge it first, accept it, and let it go.

When I become hesitant I shift my focus and be grateful to feel hesitant. Why the heck we should be grateful for being hesitant? I see it as an opportunity for growth. I withdraw for a while not because I want to escape, but I want to shift my energy to be more positive. If I wasn't hesitant maybe I would just act aggressively to anything. When I withdraw I start to think those who matter more in my life. Why we should think about those who did us wrong while we could just focus our energy to those people we love?

So yeah, just keep being kind. As you forgive, you release anything that have held you back. Do your own part and leave the rest to the universe!

Tulisan Sampah

1 Dec: Why Not?

Gonna make the date in day-month form! :P

ENGLISH:
I got this #31DaysWritingChallenge from one of my friend, Hana.
It will give you 31 different themes to write everyday.

I found out that this is so interesting because I would love to write. For me, writing is an activity to be creative and expressive. By jotting down some thoughts, I could think clearly and know what is going on in my mind. So, writing gets me to be in the condition of full awareness.

This challenge makes me have more discipline to write. It helps me being productive and gives me benefits to my language ability. I am going to write the post of this challenge into two languages, English and Indonesian. I already putted a translate gadget on my blog but it will not translate perfectly because the form of the grammar of these two languages are pretty much different, and there are some cultural circumstances.

So, wanna join this too?
Why Not?!

Connected

Both United States and Indonesia are big country in terms of area and population. From hundreds of countries in this world, the U.S. is a nation with the third biggest population and the fourth biggest in the area. Indonesia has the fourth biggest population and a fourteenth biggest area.

Spending a year in the U.S. makes me dream about the more connected Indonesia. Even though Americans is not like European who are the majority of them have traveled abroad, the majority of Americans do ever travel to another state. It is common to see Americans have visited more than three states. How about Indonesia? Hmm...

Indonesia is the biggest archipelago country which consists more than 17,000 islands. Yes! 17,000 islands.  It is considered as an obstacle for Indonesians to be connected and being united. Some people have never been in the other province. It is not really common to know some Indonesian have traveled to more than three provinces. I don't have exact numbers for this, but I think commonly Indonesians have traveled to one other province. People need to afford an airplane ticket to go to another island which costs a lot of money. People can drive, but of course they need to go to the ship once they arrive at the harbor to cross the sea. Indonesia has a higher population density than the U.S., so we can find more traffic jam along the way. It does take a lot of time for Indonesian to travel to another province.

Medan to Malang: 2824 km or 1754.7 miles
It takes approximately 56 hours driving from Medan to Malang (includes taking ferry)

Chicago to Los Angeles: 3242.8 km or 2015 miles
It takes approximately 29 hours driving from Chicago to Los Angeles

From the pictures above, you can see that travel from Medan to Malang takes more time, even though the distance is closer than Chicago to Los Angeles.

Indonesia is so diverse, I want to see the other sides of Indonesia. There are more than 300 ethnic groups and 700 local languages in Indonesia. From the demographic we can see that:

Even though the majority of Indonesians are Muslim, there are some parts of Indonesia where Islam is not dominant.

How about the ethnic groups in Indonesia? Hmm...
Source: Wikipedia
- Generally, western Indonesia is more industrialized (All of the 5 biggest cities in Indonesia are in the western part)

I live in Medan, fourth biggest city in Indonesia. I have been to four other provinces Aceh, Jakarta (The capital of Indonesia), East Java, and Bali. All of them are different! I didn't only discover new place, but new cultures and customs. The differences are always fascinating me, the differences make me learn to be more tolerant and open-minded. I am wondering if Indonesia is more connected, people must be more tolerant and appreciate differences. As Indonesia's motto says : Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Old Javanese)/ Berbeda-beda namun tetap satu (Indonesia)/ Unity in Diversity (English). Tolerance in Indonesia is good, but it's not wrong to improve it, right? How can you be tolerant with the foreigners if you can't be tolerant to the others who have the same nationality? We should value Individualism by not forgetting the connection with others.

Here are some destinations in Indonesia that are not really popular yet, because one of these reasons:
- It is hard to access
- Very far from the airport
- Very far from big city
- Local residents can't speak English well

Of course, there are many more!

IYA, BENAR.

Chicago

INFORMASI UMUM

Kota: Batavia
County (kabupaten): Kane
State (negara bagian/provinsi): Illinois
Luas Area: 25km2 atau 9.64 sq mi
Jumlah Penduduk: 26,318 Jiwa (perkiraan 2012)
Kepadatan: 1019 jiwa/km2

LOKASI

BATAVIA
Median (nilai tengah) pendapatan rumah tangga per tahun:
$90,228
Pendapatan rumah tangga (rata-rata) per tahun:
$113,923

NEW YORK CITY
Median (nilai tengah) pendapatan rumah tangga per tahun: $50,711

AMERIKA SERIKAT

Median (nilai tengah) pendapatan rumah tangga per tahun: $51,939
Pendapatan rumah tangga (rata-rata) per tahun: $72,641

Tapi, jangan salah sangka.

Contoh: A (orang yang mendapat bantuan) berhak mendapatkan 3 botol shampo, 3 bar sabun, 3 buah kotak sereal, 3 kaleng daging.

24 Hours per Day to Accomplish

When I was in 8th grade, I complained once about the time that I have in my life which is 24 hours per day. I really wanted to make a novel, I was very passionate about writing. But, feels like I didn't have enough time. I had to do hours of doing homework and getting good grades at school. I wished that I had 26 hours per day, which is impossible.

As I am getting older, I feel that 24 hours per day is enough. Complaining takes time, right? We complain because we think about the future and assume that there will be no time to do the next tasks. But, do we realize that when we are complaining and not focusing on the present moment, we are actually wasting our time. Probably, the time that we have wasted for complaining is the same amount with the time that we can use for getting done another task.

It feels crazy to know what I wanted at that time. I wanted to make a novel, get the top 10 highest grade in my middle school, be active on Twitter and Blog, and wanted to watch movie in cinema twice in a week. Do you want to know what was the result? I did not get anything of those!  But, it was totally okay. It gave me a lesson that I have to prioritize my goals.

When I just started my 9th grade, I told myself that I just wanted to focus on my academic life and finally I got good grade and continue my study in top high school in an excellent class. (In Indonesia, student start the high school at 10th grade and it is not moving class. You have to stay in the same classroom everyday because the teacher moves from one class to another class. In my school, they have a placement test. The top 36 students will be placed in an 'excellent class' and will get more homework and more challenging classes).

Approximately a year ago, I started to think about the importance of accomplishing another dream. "What is the benefit? Why I have to do that? Do I really want to accomplish that? Does it make me happy? Does it have any impacts to the society?" I have seen a lot of articles tell that we have to be careful about what we want to accomplish. Some people want to accomplish a dream to proof his/her haters that he/she can. Some people want to achieve something for getting people's approval. But of course, some people still want to achieve something to give positive impacts to the society. So, whenever we start a plan to achieve something, make sure that we are in pure mind and calm condition.

The biggest dream of the human is to be happy

Two days ago, I read an article written by the founder of PrepScholar who attended Harvard University. The article is How to Get Into Harvard and the Ivy League, by a Harvard Alum. I have read a lot of article about tips to get good grades, get high score of SAT/ACT, and how to get into top university. But, this one is the longest and my favorite! It enlightened me to plan better about my study. That article told me that instead of being a well-rounded student, we have to be a 'big spike' or in another name: We have to be a world-class student who masters something that we really love and passionate about.

If Bill Gates can't plays Football, who cares? He owns Microsoft, dude!. If J.K. Rowling is very bad in Biology, who cares? Hundreds million copies of her novel have been sold! We don't have to be good in science, sport, and art at the same time, right?
Anyway, that article drove me to start doing what I really love. I am happy to do what I love. I could be a master of anything, but not everything. Everyone could be a master of what they love. I love to study Humanities and Social Studies. So, what about you?

Cukup

Sekian.

Your positive energy,
Dzikra Handika

Drafts

This is a reminder for myself that I have a lot of drafts that needs to be posted. This one also a notice for my audiences that I still have something to be posted :) :D Hahaha.
I am prioritizing which one will be posted first. Hmmm...

Aku Menikmati Tulisan Ini (I am enjoying this writing)

Dalam versi Bahasa Indonesia - In Indonesian version:

Aku Menikmati Tulisan Ini

Kulit pun ikut merasakan sensasinya!

Aku terbawa arus kebaikan

Kamu melihat permata
Kamu adalah aku yang dulu
Sekarang aku sebesar jagat raya!
Sekarang kamu sebesar jagar raya!
Sekarang kita sebesar jagat raya!

Mungkin kamu tidak percaya, bahwa selamanya..
Selamanya... dan akan selamanya...
Kebaikan ada dalam dirimu... Kamu percaya itu!
Selamanya kamu akan percaya! Selamanya!

In English version:

I am enjoying this writing

The most important is the noble of our dream, not the blur of that paper
We take a breath and make sure to calm ourselves
The most important is our memory and sense, not the uploads in another world
We make sure that we are happy forever
Even the skins join to feel that sensations!

I am enjoying this writing
I am reading a series of words which contain a meaning
A meaning that is destined to beatify the entire mankind
I am drifted in a stream of kindness
I am enjoying a beautiful sensation that my eyes consume through a series of words
A series of words which has built by imagination

Panic? Why?
Is there any dirt in your heart?
Calm! Accept the reality and calm yourself
Be patient.. in this instant, your panic is disappearing one by one
In this minute we are smiling happily, taking a breath as deep as possible to relax
We believe, forever
Relax is a gate to a beautiful path.

We enjoy this beautiful path, wander in a super journey
One... Two... Three
We are walking inside.

I am Us. Because you believe that we are all connected
I am drifted in a holy stream, same like the disposition of all people which must be holy.
I am drifted in a stream, a stream that I like
A stream that clears me,
A stream that reminds me that I am part of holiness
A stream that destroys the dirt which is a little.

You are seeing the jewel
You are who I was
Now I am as big as universe!
Now You are as big as universe!
Now we are as big as universe!

Maybe you don't believe, that forever..
Forever and always be forever..
The kindness exists in yourself.. You believe it!
Forever you will believe it! Forever!
